At East Kenwick Primary, English makes up an integral part of the school teaching and learning day. English aims to ensure that students:
- learn to listen to, read, view, speak, write, create and reflect on spoken, written and multimodal texts across a growing range of contexts with accuracy, fluency and purpose.
- appreciate, enjoy and use the English language to evoke feelings, convey information, form ideas, and entertain, persuade and argue.
- develop a love and an appreciation of literature.
Programs used at our School
In order to ensure consistency across the school, our teachers are required to use the following programs to enhance student learning.
Spelling
Whole school - Staff have undergone training in PLD (Promoting Literacy Development), that provides an Australian, evidence-based approach to Structured Synthetic Phonics (SSP) for primary school educators.
Reading
Whole school - All years use the Talk 4 Reading approach. By using this approach, teachers aim to develop children into efficient, effective, thoughtful and strategic readers who can learn about life, discover information and deepen their thinking through considering other people’s views and experiences with a critical mind.
Writing
From Kindergarten to Year 2 - Talk 4 Writing enables children to read and write independently for a variety of audiences and purposes within different subjects.
In Years 3 to 6 - the Seven Steps approach reinforces and builds upon the student’s prior knowledge to further develop writing skills.
